Storyboard

When we had out idea for our music video we all start to produce a storyboard to give us an insight in to how out music video will be. As we started drawing our music video on to the storyboard i found that when we was drawing we came up with chnges that will make a video look better and was therefore able to draft our ideas

Here is an image of the storyboards that we produced.

First Filming

On Thursday 21st January decided to go to the woods by georgina's house to film the woods scene at the start of the video. As we decided we needed to have balloon for this scene Rakhee
Hennie and I went to the balloon shop and got three red balloons and two white ones as we thought that this would look quite effective in the video. Once we got to the woods we had to find a suitable location within the woods Georgina found this location as they are near to her house. For the clown he had to wear a mask that we had bought and he had to be dress in all black. Then when filming the clown he had the balloons and we had many close ups and medium shots of the clown with and without the balloon. For the girl we had many shots of her including closes ups, medium and long shots, point of view shot and shots from behind her. Also as the clown is meant to be spying on the girl we did many shots from behind brushes and trees. In addition we did many shots of the girl running away. We decided that the clown should give the girl a balloon but the audience will not see it and then when the girl come back in to shot she has a balloon

Next time we are going to film the first section of our video when there are face, also we may film as rose to add it to the video as this define danger

Location

When we decided our storyline, Hennie decided to take some pictures of the alleyways close to her house. We have decided that we are going to use this location for the first part of our music video.

Our main location for our music video is the woods. Georgina has wood by her house and she took these pictures to show us.

Both sets of pictures have been changed to black and white as we have decided that we want our music video to be in black and white, therefore we wanted to see what they would look like. In addition both the locations are close to our school so we will all be able to get there during lesson and in our free time.

Two Door Cinema Club

Analysis Exsiting Music Videos

Raining Men analysis

This video is set in many different locations and is focused mainly on the physical body. It has a theme based around the musicals Fame and Flashdance.
Intertextuality- many themes are used including Fame and Flashdance.
The camera shots are nearly all from the front showing Geri Halliwell face on. Many people star in this production and it is very energetic and lively.
At the beginning the first words of the song are “humidity’s rising“and the camera shot moves upwards to match the lyrics. Later during the video when the words “getting low” are sung the camera shot moves downwards.
During the chorus more dancers join in, in a carnival style with lots of colour and dynamic dancing. But up until them the colours in the video have been mainly black and white.

During the first scenes the dancer is not identified. This video is based around the empowerment of women and launched Geri Halliwell as a solo singer. She used this opportunity to present herself in a new way and to show off her new slender and lean body.

There is a contrast between the judges being dressed in suits and the dancers dressed in leotards and leg warmers. The judges are dressed very formally in business suits and are looking at her over their glasses and frowning showing that they are not impressed. Half way through the video Geri kisses the head judge trying to break down any barriers that there may be between them.

The video is mainly a song and dance routine with excerpts from both Fame and Flashdance included in the sequences.
The record scene relates to Flashdance and enables her to mess up as the needle on the record slips. There are also shots showing other students ridiculing her from the doorway.

Diegetic noise of the dancers’ footsteps can be heard as well as traffic and the needle going around the record on the record player
The sequences of fragmented body shots create a feeling of anticipation.
The fact that a record is being played on a record player shows that this is set in pre CD era.

First image is a close up with a formal made of address
As music starts she is looking at her feet or the judges.
The shot at foot level showing the judges tapping their feet is reoccurring all through the video and there is lots of movement of the cameras with her. There are also over the shoulder shots which show us the judges’ perspective.
There are many quick cuts to show the vigorous pace of the video.
The second half of the video is much more colourful and shows her in many different outfits, it also shows her doing lots of different physical activities including running down the corridor to rehearsals (links to American school), aerobics, curl ups ,kickboxing and even ballet. This is to depict that men can not be relied upon and women lead the way.
The last section of the video is set outside in a New York street with lots of colour including a yellow taxi showing an extremely up -beat mood and full of life, although the weather is raining. She is wearing a top with “famous” on it which looks like the Fame logo.

Changes to First Verse

After discussing our second idea with our teacher she liked the pitch but did not like the idea for the first verse as it did not seem to fit in with the music from the video. So as group we came up with an alternative idea for the first verse.

First verse - We see the girl from the woods draped in steamers, she walks along a path and sees the clown holding balloons, the shot will not show her arm which is nearest the clown and then watches the clown till it is out of sight but as the camera pulls away the arm that had been cut out there will be a balloon. When she realises she has the balloon she turns back to the clown who has disappeared. Then there will be a cut to the girl sat on a chair in the woods with streamers wrapped around her body and the clown will appear from behind her and covers her face.

I think this idea fits in better with both the music and storyline as it makes the clown seem mysterious and it indicates that she may have a spilt personality disorder.

Discussing our first idea

After discussing our idea in our group we decided to discuss it with Mrs McLuckie. We start by telling her about the idea by she said to was too linear as she waking up, brushes her teeth, gets invited to a party etc. After talk to Mrs McLuckie we decided that this was true and we needed to make it more weird and different. We all wanted to keep the clown idea but we just had to develop it more

In addition Mrs McLuckie listen to our song that we had choosen to go with it, she beleived that it did not fit in with the sing either as it sounded sexy and we needed something strange to fit the storyline.

Therefore we needed to develop the clown idea and choose a new song.

Video idea

Introduction - When the music starts with the uptempo beat there is going to be shots of different face including clowns. during the short instrumental the girls is going to be running though the forest.

First Verse - she is walking though streamers down an alleyway towards the woods as she approaches the woods she pasts the clown holding balloons, next the camera will pan to the girl holding the balloon then it cuts to the girls sitting on the chair with streams wrapped around her

Chorus - running in to the woods, man slumped at tree, the clown has red hands, girls runs away screaming, the man looks up and then we zoom into the clowns red lips.

Second verse - zoom out of red lips, girls in bathroom putting make up on in mirror turns to friend who looks horrified, point of view shot girl has clown mask on. Friend then screams and runs away. Girl turn back and sees her normal reflection in the mirror but the clown stood beside her

Chorus - running into the woods, Girl in street stood still with people walking around her - fast forward

Instrumental - montage of shots, then the instrumental climax returns to the music at the start, the girl is stood opposite clown, then the clown mask is removed and you see her face. Rapid shots o the girl struggling to remove the mask and drops it then disappears. New hand comes into shot and picks the mask up.

Lyrics

Muse - Feeling good

Birds flying high you know how I feel

Sun in the sky you know how I feel

Reeds driftin' on by you know how I feel

It's a new dawn

It's a new dayI

t's a new life

For me

And I'm feeling good

Fish in the sea you know how I feel

River running free you know how I feel

blossom in the trees you know how I feel

It's a new dawn

It's a new day

It's a new life

For me

And I'm feeling good

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, don't you know

Butterflies all havin' fun you know what I mean

Sleep in peace when day is done

And this old world is a new world

And a bold world

For me

Stars when you shine you know how I feel

Scent of the pine you know how I feel

Oh freedom is mine

And I know how I feel

It's a new dawn

It's a new day

It's a new life

For me

And I'm feeling good

Analysing the Lyrics

When we had decided that we were going to use 'I can talk' Two Door Cinema Club. We then thought that we need to look at the lyrics and try to work out what they mean. So we printed out the lyrics on an A3 page and analysed them. After we finished analysing the lyrics i decided to type up the lyrics so we could look at it in more detail.

Here are the analysed lyrics

Our Choosen Song

The song we have decided to use is 'I Can Talk' Two Door Cinema Club. The band describe the song as having uptempo electronic beats underpin jaunty guitars and triple-tracked vocals.

Here is the video of the song

Finding a new song

Firstly we decided to find a song that would fit with the clown idea. We all found this very difficult, we were looking at tracks with an uptempo beat in parts so we could have fast cuts and quick shots. we also looked and different genres but none seemed suitable.

After a few lesson Georgina had found a track from a new band Two Door Cinema Club. This band is not well knew as the have only released a few tracks but they are releasing an album in the near furture.

When we had found the track we wanted to use, we then began to think of a new storyline to go with the song.

First Idea

When we all first met to discuss our ideas Georgina already had an idea

Her idea was about a girl in a clown mask doing day to day tasks because she felt different to other people. There were shots of her doing such things as waking up, eating breakfast etc but in all the shots she is wearing a clown mask. The next day indicated by the sunrise the girls has a party invitation when she goes to the party people start laughing at her because she is different. after leaving the party a gang of people beat her and try to pull of her mask then someone comes along to help her and when she see his face he also has a clown mask on. Then they walk of hand in hand as they have found there sole mate in the sunset.

After hearing this idea from Georgina we all really liked it and start to discuss other suggestions that could be used in it such as different camera angles, situation and locations. In addition we also started to think about what music to use and decided that the song 'Feeling Good' by Muse would go with our story.
